What to Expect at Your First Cosmetic Tattoo Appointment — From Someone Who's Done Hundreds of Them

Being nervous before your first cosmetic tattoo appointment is completely normal. In fact, I'd be surprised if you weren't at least a little bit apprehensive — it's a new experience, it involves needles, and it's going to change something about how you look. Of course that feels significant.
But one of the most common things clients say to me when they leave is: "That was nothing like I expected." Usually in the best possible way.
So let me walk you through exactly what happens when you come to SEPEMA — from before you even arrive to the weeks after your appointment. No vague reassurances. Just the real picture.
Before Your Appointment
Every new client at SEPEMA has a consultation before any treatment takes place — and that consultation is always free. This isn't just a box-ticking exercise. It's where we actually figure out what you want, whether the treatment is right for you, and exactly how we're going to approach it.
We'll talk about your goals, look at reference images if that's helpful, and I'll give you my honest assessment of what's achievable for your specific features or concerns. Nothing is decided or committed to until you're ready.
Before your treatment appointment, you'll receive preparation instructions specific to your treatment. General guidelines include: no alcohol in the 24 hours prior, staying well-hydrated, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure on the treatment area in the days beforehand.
When You Arrive
The clinic is designed to feel calm and private — it has the warmth of a boutique beauty studio and the cleanliness of a medical suite. You'll be settled in and we'll do a brief check-in to make sure nothing has changed since your consultation and that you're feeling comfortable and ready.
There's no rushing. If you have questions that have come up since your consultation — ask them now. I'd rather spend an extra ten minutes making sure you feel confident than begin when you have a niggling concern.
The Treatment Itself
This varies by treatment, but here's what's consistent across all of them at SEPEMA:
Mapping and planning comes first. For brows and lips especially, we spend significant time mapping the shape before any pigment is applied. You'll see exactly what I'm proposing, and nothing proceeds until you're happy.
Numbing is applied. Topical anaesthetic is used before and throughout all treatments to keep you comfortable.
Your feedback is welcome throughout. I'll check in with you regularly during the treatment — if something feels uncomfortable, or if you want to pause, just say so.
We go at your pace. There is no rush. A good result takes the time it takes.
Immediately After
What you look like immediately post-treatment depends on what you've had done — but for most treatments at SEPEMA, it's a lot more subtle than people expect. There's no dramatic swelling, no alarming colour, nothing that requires you to hide at home.
Lip blush clients leave with a light, tinted-balm appearance. Brow clients leave looking like they've had their brows done — not like they've been drawn on. Paramedical clients (scar revision, stretch marks) may have some redness in the treated area for 24–48 hours, which resolves quickly.
You'll leave with full written aftercare instructions and my contact details for any questions that come up during healing.
The Healing Process
This is the part that catches people off guard if they're not prepared for it: the initial result is not the final result. Pigment always looks more intense immediately after treatment and softens significantly as the skin heals. For lip and brow treatments, the colour will settle and soften by 40–70% over the first 6–8 weeks — revealing the true, natural result underneath.
"The initial result is not the final result. Give your skin the time it needs — th
e best version of your treatment reveals itself at the 6–8 week mark."
This is completely normal, and it's why a touch-up appointment is always recommended 6–8 weeks after your initial session. The touch-up is where we fine-tune, perfect, and ensure you're completely happy with the outcome.
The Most Important Thing I Can Tell You
Come in for a consultation before you commit to anything. It's free, it's genuinely useful, and by the end of it you'll know exactly what to expect, whether the treatment is right for you, and whether you feel comfortable in my hands. There's no pressure — ever.
The best clients I've had are the ones who came in nervous and left feeling informed. That's what I'm here for.
